Breast Implant
Revision

in Springfield, MO

Our cosmetic centers in Missouri offer breast implant revision surgeries to address cosmetic concerns and provide comfort. Women who undergo breast augmentation (breast enlargement) may not be happy with their results for many reasons. The implants’ shape, size, and/or placement can be problematic. They may also experience certain complications, such as leaking, wrinkling, implant displacement, or capsular contracture. Our board-certified surgeon, Dr. Bailey, can address these concerns with a safe and effective revision. He uses the latest techniques to provide excellent results and make patients satisfied with their new appearance.

What Is Breast Implant Revision?

Breast implant revision is a procedure that replaces or modifies existing breast implants. It is performed when patients want to change their current implants’ size, shape, or type. The surgery usually takes 2-4 hours and requires general anesthesia to provide maximum comfort for the patient. During the procedure, Dr. Bailey makes an incision, removes the old implant, and inserts a new one. This surgery allows patients to improve the look and feel of their breasts if they are unsatisfied with their original implants.

Reasons For Breast Implant Revision Surgery

After undergoing breast augmentation, women may become pregnant
or lose significant amounts of weight, which might change their body shape. As a result, they may no longer be happy with how their breasts look. Aging and gravity can also contribute to changes in breast appearance. Therefore, many women decide to undergo additional surgery. Typical reasons for breast implant revision include the following:
The most common reason women seek corrective surgery is to change implant size. We usually recommend waiting up to one year after the initial procedure before undergoing revisions. Time is needed for the swelling to subside and the implants to settle. Exceptions are when there is a pronounced asymmetry between the breasts or the implant has been damaged.
Implants can leak due to age, defects, injury to the breast, or overfilling. Whatever the reason, such devices should be replaced as soon as possible. A leak in a saline implant is immediately noticeable because it deflates, and the body absorbs the filler. The same problem in silicone implants can only be discovered during routine mammograms.

There is always a risk of complications after breast augmentation surgery. This includes:

  • Wrinkling and rippling of the implant (usually a saline one)

  • Capsular contracture, in which scar tissue forms around the implant, hardening the breast and changing its look and feel

  • Symmastia, in which the implants drift together and meet in the middle of the chest

Preparation for Breast
Implant Revision

The first step is a consultation with Dr. Bailey to discuss the reasons
for revision surgery. He evaluates the current implants and breast tissue
to determine if replacement is recommended. Dr. Bailey also discusses different options for implant size, shape, placement, and incision site.
The patient’s medical history and goals are studied carefully to create
an appropriate surgical plan.
A typical preparation process includes:

Breast Implant Revision Procedure

Breast implant revision is typically performed under general anesthesia. This means that the patient is fully asleep and unconscious during the procedure. General anesthesia is provided intravenously (injection in the vein), allowing Dr. Bailey to perform this delicate surgery without the patient experiencing pain or moving.
The surgeon makes incisions to access breast implants. The extent of these openings depends on the reason for revision, implant size, degree of capsular contracture, and other factors. Often, the inframammary incision is selected (in the breast crease).
The surgeon gently detaches the scar tissue capsule surrounding the old breast implant. Then, he removes the existing implant, draining any fluid or ruptured silicone gel from within the implant shell. This allows the surgeon to fully see the pocket and assess the surrounding breast tissue for abnormalities.
Once the old implant is extracted, Dr. Bailey may need to modify the pocket by releasing scar tissue adhesions, adjusting dimensions, draining more fluids, or addressing capsule calcification (removing hardened areas). These procedures prepare the pocket to accommodate the new device.
Dr. Bailey carefully inserts the breast implant through the incisions. Its type, size, shape, and texture are selected based on the patient’s anatomy, aesthetic goals, and reasons for revision.

In some cases, Dr. Bailey performs a breast lift to remove excess skin and other tissues. The nipples and areola may be repositioned higher to make the breasts look youthful and attractive.

Finally, Dr. Bailey carefully sutures the incisions in multiple layers. This allows the wounds to heal properly with minimal scarring. Surgical tape, skin glue, or other materials promote optimal incision healing.

Recovery After Breast Surgery

Week 1

The first week after breast implant revision surgery is focused on recovery. Patients experience swelling and bruising of the breasts. Pain and discomfort are common. Patients are advised to take any prescribed pain medications as directed. Rest is essential, but light activity is encouraged to prevent blood clots. Patients may need to wear a surgical bra to support the breasts as they heal.
During the second week after surgery, swelling and bruising continue to improve. The discomfort subsides, but patients should continue taking pain medication if needed. Stitches may be absorbed or removed during this period. Patients can usually return to light daily activities. However, they should avoid strenuous exercise and lifting. Follow-up appointments allow Dr. Bailey to monitor healing, remove stitches, and provide valuable recommendations.
Three weeks after breast implant revision surgery, most of the bruising has faded, and the swelling has decreased considerably. Patients can move around more comfortably and lift light objects. Normal daily activities may be resumed, but vigorous exercise should still be avoided. Scars continue to heal and will fade over time.
After one month of recovery, the swelling decreases further, and the breasts settle into their final shape. Patients can ease back into their regular routines and exercises, avoiding impact to the chest area. Scars continue to mature and fade. The final results of this surgery are visible after 6-12 months because it is essential to wait until the symptoms disappear entirely.

Candidates for Breast Implant Revision

Breast implant revision can be performed as a functional surgery to replace a ruptured implant or address capsular contracture. It may also be done to improve the cosmetic results of a previous breast enhancement or reconstructive surgery. Regardless of the reason, Dr. Bailey screens each patient thoroughly to minimize risks and achieve the desired results.
Potential candidates for revision surgery include:

health concerns

Patients who have health concerns about their breast implants, like BIA-ALCL

poor aesthetic outcomes

Those with implant palpability, visibility, or poor aesthetic outcomes from the initial surgery
