Preparation and Marking: On the day of the procedure, Dr. Bailey marks the abnormal veins that are going to be treated using a special pen. After that, he cleanses the area to be treated. Next, he administers local anesthesia in order to eliminate the patient’s discomfort.
Insertion of the Laser Fiber: Next, Dr. Bailey makes a small skin incision using a small needle. Through it, he inserts a diode laser fiber into the affected vein. Then, the catheter is guided up the entire length of the vein, positioning it next to the malfunctioning valve.
Laser Energy Application: Already placed, the laser fiber starts emitting intense heat that seals the vein. While the fiber is gradually withdrawn, the heat causes the blood in the vein to coagulate. This makes the vein collapse and close.
Closure and Post-Treatment: After the vein is sealed, dressing of the incision site is performed. Next, Dr. Baliey provides the patient with compression stockings. It may take approximately 45 minutes to an hour to perform the procedure, depending on how many veins will be treated.
