What Are Reticular Veins?

Reticular veins are small, blue veins that appear close to the skin’s surface. They often occur on the legs and may be an early sign of developing varicose veins. These formations are usually harmless, but some people seek treatment for cosmetic reasons or if they are symptomatic. Typical procedures include laser therapy, sclerotherapy, and radiofrequency ablation. These treatments damage the vein, which eventually fades and is absorbed by the body.

Preparation for Reticular Veins Treatment

Before receiving reticular vein procedures, patients should schedule a consultation appointment to discuss symptoms, medical history, and treatment options. Dr. Bailey performs an ultrasound scan to visualize problematic veins. He also gives pre-operative instructions, such as avoiding aspirin and other blood thinning medications for 1-2 weeks to minimize bruising and bleeding risks. If everything is good, we can transition
to the treatment phase.
Patients with the following conditions may have to wait
or avoid invasive procedures:

Our Treatments for Reticular Veins

Microphlebectomy is a minimally invasive procedure in which small incisions are made to remove varicose veins. The diseased tissue is gently extracted through the small openings using microscopic hooks. This method allows for the accurate removal of problematic veins while minimizing scarring.
Sclerotherapy involves injecting a special solution into reticular veins. The fluid causes the vein to scar and eventually fade. Dr. Bailey uses ultrasound guidance for precise injections to ensure maximum safety and perfect results. This targeted approach allows the sclerosing agent to reach the diseased veins specifically.
Visual sclerotherapy also involves injecting a solution into reticular veins to cause scarring and fading over time. However, this is done without ultrasound guidance, relying solely on the doctor’s sight. Visual sclerotherapy is used when the veins are very close to the surface, and there is no need to use additional techniques to guide injections.
This procedure involves a laser applying short bursts of light to the skin overlying reticular veins. The heat damages the diseased tissues, causing them to fade over time. This is a non-invasive approach requiring no needles or incisions.
Endovenous therapy delivers laser beams via a thin fiber inserted directly inside an abnormal vein. This energy heats the walls of the vein and causes them to collapse. The procedure removes damaged tissues and allows them to be absorbed by the body over time.
This technique applies radiofrequency energy through a catheter inserted into the abnormal vein. The heat damages the walls, causing scar tissue to seal the vein shut so it can fade over time. Like laser therapy, this is a minimally invasive way to deal with reticular veins. However, it involves radiofrequency instead of light energy.

Recovery After Reticular Veins Treatment

First 24 Hours

After our procedures, patients may experience some bruising, swelling, and tenderness around the treated veins. They are advised to walk regularly, avoid strenuous activity, and elevate their legs to reduce swelling. Compression stockings may be worn to provide comfort and support. Over-the-counter pain medication can help relieve any unpleasant sensations.
During the first week after reticular vein treatment, patients should continue walking daily and avoid standing or sitting for long periods. Some bruising may be visible, and slight tenderness or tingling might persist around target areas. Patients can resume normal light activities but should still avoid straining or heavy lifting. Compression stockings are typically worn for 1 week post-procedure.
Most symptoms resolve two weeks after reticular vein therapy. At this point, patients can stop wearing compression stockings and resume their routines and activities. Treated veins should continue fading over the next few weeks. Some patients may require a follow-up appointment with Dr. Bailey to check progress. With proper aftercare, most people recover fully within 1-2 weeks.

Benefits of Reticular Veins Treatment

Minimally Invasive Procedures

Most treatments, like sclerotherapy and endovenous ablation, are minimally invasive. Therefore, they require little recovery time and do not cause severe discomfort. Small incisions may be made to access the veins, but no actual surgery is involved. This allows people to return to regular activity quickly after treatment.

Prevents Complications (Varicose Veins and Spider Veins)

Reticular veins are usually harmless. However, if left untreated, they can lead to more severe conditions, such as varicose veins, leg swelling, skin damage, and leg ulcers. Addressing abnormal veins early may prevent these complications.

Enhances Blood Flow

Abnormal veins allow blood to pool and impair proper circulation in the legs. Removing the diseased tissue makes the body healthier and reduces many risks. Blood starts flowing properly through the remaining veins.

Relieves Symptoms

Reticular veins may cause aching, burning, itching, and fatigue in the legs. Treating them can relieve these uncomfortable symptoms, making people more active and happy.

Improves Appearance

Small bluish veins on the legs can cause self-consciousness. People may become concerned about their appearance and feel uncomfortable in certain situations. Luckily, our treatments can greatly improve the look of the legs and boost confidence.
